About Belum-Temengor Forest Complex

Belum-Temengor Forest Complex

The Belum-Temengor Forest Complex, located in northern Perak state of Malaysia, covers over 300,000 hectares of primarily tropical rainforest, including two main forest reserves: Royal Belum State Park and Temengor Forest Reserve. This forest complex is part of the larger Central Forest Spine, an important ecological corridor that preserves some of the oldest rainforest in Peninsular Malaysia, estimated to be over 130 million years old. The landscape includes undulating hills, dense forests, numerous rivers, waterfalls, and freshwater lakes, supporting a remarkable diversity of plant and animal life. It is home to rare and endangered species such as the Malayan tiger, Malayan tapir, Asian elephant, hornbills, and the Sultan mahseer fish, a prized catch for anglers. The forest complex has been protected primarily for conservation, research, and eco-tourism, with a focus on minimal-impact activities. Visitors can enjoy guided jungle treks, canopy walks, birdwatching, boat trips on Temengor Lake, and visits to indigenous Orang Asli communities. Notable landmarks include Elephant Hill (Bukit Gajah), Temengor Dam, and the waterfalls along the Sungai Temengor river system. The area’s remoteness and well-preserved habitat attract adventurers looking to experience one of Southeast Asia's last great rainforests. Its ecological significance has also drawn ongoing scientific study and conservation partnerships, positioning it as a vital refuge for endangered wildlife and a natural heritage site for Malaysia.
